Movement as Prayer

Tribal Prayer Movements

Join UQUALLA for Tribal Prayer Movements, a ceremonial movement practice drawing on ancestral wisdom, rhythm, and prayer to awaken the body as a vessel for spirit.

Rooted in Indigenous tradition, this class moves the body through intentional, prayerful gesture and rhythm, inviting a felt connection to lineage, land, and the sacred.

No dance or movement experience is needed — only a willingness to let the body speak and to move as an offering.

Portrait of UQUALLA

UQUALLA

Ceremonial Guide & Medicine Keeper

UQUALLA is a two-spirit ceremonial leader and medicine keeper of the Havasupai Nation, the People of the Blue-Green Waters who live within the Grand Canyon. Carrying the lineage of his grandfather, a traditional medicine man, UQUALLA guides ceremonies rooted in prayer, sacred movement, and ancestral wisdom, offering a bridge between ancient tradition and modern life.

A Note from UQUALLA

When the body prays through movement, the spirit remembers what the mind has forgotten. Join me in this practice — not to perform, but to return to something older than words. In spirit embrace.

Insight · Worth Knowing Anyway

Movement as an Older Language Than Words

Tribal movement draws on traditions where the body, not speech, carried the prayer.

01

Two-Spirit Tradition

UQUALLA's two-spirit identity reflects a role recognized across many Indigenous cultures long before European contact — often understood as carrying both masculine and feminine spirit, and holding a distinct ceremonial function within the community.

02

Dance as Devotion, Globally

From whirling dervishes in Sufi practice to trance dance in West African traditions, cultures with no historical contact independently arrived at rhythmic movement as a direct path to altered, prayerful states.

03

The Body Remembers Rhythm First

Rhythmic, repetitive movement measurably shifts heart rate variability and nervous system state — the body often settles into a practice like this before the mind catches up to why.

Why Attend

Why Attend

A ceremonial practice inviting the body to become a vessel for prayer and spirit.

Connect

Reconnect with ancestral wisdom and lineage through intentional, prayerful movement.

Embody

Move the body as an offering, letting rhythm and gesture speak what words cannot.

Remember

Awaken a felt sense of the sacred within the body, land, and spirit.

Special Instructions

Before youmove

A few small preparations — so the body is free to speak and move as an offering.

I

Arrive early

Please arrive 10 minutes before start to ground yourself before the drum and rhythm begin — this practice moves quickly into the body.

II

What to wear

Loose, comfortable clothing that allows full range of movement. Bare feet or soft, flexible footwear are best — many practice barefoot.

III

Come without expectation

No dance or movement experience is needed, and there is no right way to move. Come willing to let rhythm and prayer move through you, not to perform for anyone watching.
